HABITAT:   Throughout the world, living closely with people.

• Dogs are a domesticated (which means made tame) subspecies of the gray wolf.
• Dogs are the first species to be tamed, or domesticated, by humans. This happened over 15,000 years ago.
• They were originally domesticated for work, such as pulling or carrying loads, hunting, watching sheep, guarding property.
• Today, dogs still hunt, herd sheep, guard property, and lead the blind. But their main role is to be companions to people - pets.
