COMMON NAME: Panda, Giant Panda
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Ailuropoda melanoleuca
DIET: Bamboo. A huge amount of bamboo is consumed on a daily basis.
YOUNG: The female Panda gives birth to one or two cubs. The baby Panda is born blind and only weighs 5 ounces (142 grams).
HABITAT: Remote, mountainous regions in central China.
FACTS:
- Pandas have very strong teeth and jaws in order to crush and break the bamboo stalks.
- They are solitary animals who prefer to live alone.
- Pandas have a good sense of smell which allows male Giant Pandas to avoid each other, and helps the male and female find each other during mating season.
