COMMON NAME:  Golden Lion Tamarin (GLT)
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Leontopithecus rosalia
DIET:  Mainly fruit and nectar. Also insects.
YOUNG:  Twins are frequently born. The lead female begins having young when she reaches 18 months of age. The entire group raises the Golden Tamarin babies.
HABITAT:  Swampy forests in the eastern part of Brazil.
FACTS:

• GLTs sleep in tree holes, which are used for heat conservation and protection from predators.
• The tamarins give alarm calls in response to strange events or threatening animals.
• Tamarin groups actively defend a territory against other GLTs. Territories average about a hundred acres.
